Gator Bike

Jim Jablon, a wildlife rehabilitation expert from Spring Hill, Fla.,  got together with his associate Benny Ohrman to make this imposing motorcycle.

Ohrman had never worked with alligator skin before, so it presented some unexpected new challenges for him.

Ohrman said he soaked it in his swimming pool for three weeks to soften it.”It really surprised my gardener the first time he saw it,” he said.

Even after a long soaking, the hide was still so stiff he had to use an electric drill instead of a leather punch to make holes in it for stitching.

“It’s so tough I think bullets would bounce off of it,”

To raise money for Jablon’s non-profit organization, Wildlife Rehabilitation of Hernando, they put the bike together in their spare time and have begun selling raffle tickets at $100 a piece.  Now that it’s all over the internet, I can’t expect those will stay unsold for long.

Here are  a few more pictures, complete with a gratuitous albino python.
