Spectacular Cosmic Coincidence

Russian Meteor

Around 9:30AM Moscow time a meteor streaked across the Ural Mountains, releasing several kilotons of energy.

Window shattered by the meteor's sonic boom

The meteor entered the atmosphere at about 33,000mph, causing a massive sonic boom to shatter windows along it’s path.  Over 900 people have reported sustaining injuries from the sound explosion.

Give it to me straight

  •  SIZE: Reports vary from the size of a kitchen table, to an SUV.
  • SPEED: Entered the atmosphere traveling at 33,000mph.
  • WEIGHT: Scientists are estimating that if the meteor is made of pure iron it could weight anywhere from 8-10 tons!

  • WHERE: Russia’s Chelyabinsk region, about 900 miles east of Moscow.
  • WHEN: About 9:30AM, local time.
  • ODDS: Sergei Lamzin, deputy head of the Sternberg Sternberg State Astronomical Institute in Moscow, says Earth is bombarded with more than 100 tons of dust and sand-size articles a day, most of which burns up in the atmosphere.  According to NASA, once every 100 years asteroids larger than about 50 meters reach the Earth’s surface, and every few hundred thousand years, asteroids larger than a mile across may cause global disasters.

Asteroid DA14 and Russian Meteor not linked

Earlier this week we wrote a blog on Asteroid 2012 DA14, which is the LARGEST recorded asteroid to pass this CLOSE to Earth.

When the Russian meteor was first reported, many speculated the two were related.  However, Alan Fitzsimmons, an astronomer at the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen’s University Belfast, says Da14 and the Russian meteor are approaching earth from opposite directions, indicating there is no correlation.

“This is literally a cosmic coincidence, although a spectacular one.”

  1. Don’t forget that ANOTHER meteor also hit Siberia…in 1908,I believe.

  2. I wonder if this has had an effect on energy levels in people around the globe? I had no idea this happened until my husband told me about it. I haven’t been able to sit down for two days and felt like I was super excited about something. I had no reason to feel this way, but I wonder if the energy from the meteor had anything to do with it?

  3. Three celestial events in as many days….wow!

  4. The Russian diamond mine pictured is in Mirny, Sakha province, about 600 miles almost due south of the Popigai impact site:

The Russian diamonds are found in the same *volcanic* rock (Kimberlite) as the South African diamonds, and diamonds elsewhere in the world.
Impacts happen very fast. Crystals do not grow quickly – even diamonds.
The mine is 1.2 km in diameter, and has been shut dow,. The impact site is 90 km in diameter, and satellite photos do not show ANY discernible development.

  5. The “FIRST FOOTAGE RAW” looks like a video of a common lava lake. There are 4 continuous lava lakes, 6 which show recent intermittent activity, and 7 more which are unconfirmed. and ten more which have shown lava lake activity in historical times – from Iceland to Antarctica.

  6. Christel Platt says:

Does anyone know of any definite footage that it was a meteor? Im just not so quick to say that, with the missiles, drones and nuclear weapons being created, you have to wonder and worry about the safety of such things.
