Driving Dogs

Puppy Chauffeurs

This is NOT a joke.  Watch the video above.  These dogs are REALLY DRIVING!

Monty, a giant schnauzer, at the New Zealand driving school for dogs
There is a charity in New Zealand that is training dogs how to drive.  The thought is if they can show how trainable and smart dogs are, more people will want to adopt them.

Road Ready

It takes about 7 weeks of training until the dogs are ready to get behind the wheel.

The training first takes place indoors where the canines are taught 10 basic behavioral chains, such as shifting, and acceleration and braking commands.

I think 7 weeks is pretty good!  It took me at least a few months to muster up the courage to take my driving test!  And please, let’s not mention the accidents and tickets I racked up my first few years on the road.  My parents are still not over it.

Update, 12/12/12

Monty and his buddies passed their driving tests!  The driving tests were broadcast on LIVE TV.  The result?  Not only did they pass with flying colors, but all the dogs were adopted!  As their tagline states- Dogs this smart deserve a home.  To find out how you can help, visit your local SPCA.
