Landfill Harmonic

Garbage Band

There is a town in Paraguay that is built on top of a landfill. The residents of Cateurab not only live among the garbage, the garbage is their livelihood.

Violin: metal cannister, fork,
used strings, recycled wood, tuning pegs
Many who live in the town work as garbage collectors and survive on the trash. They rely on recycling discarded items. Some items they sell, other items they use in their daily lives.

Life in Cateurab is not easy. The families that live here are among the poorest in Paraguay and the children do not get many opportunities.

Nicolás Gómez, a garbage collector, and Favio Chávez, a music instructor, wanted to make a difference in the lives of some of these children. They decided to start a music group.

Potential in the trash

Clarinet: tin water pipe, metal bottle caps,
plastic buttons, metal spoon and fork handles.
Musical instruments are expensive. Since Gómez and Chávez did not have money to purchase instruments, they did the next best thing: they constructed instruments from items found in the trash!

‘Recycled Orchestra’ was born

The results truly are unbelievable. Gómez and Chávez, with the help of the children, have managed to create an entire orchestra out of nothing.

Even more unbelievable, the kids in the orchestra are amazing! They make trash sound like a million dollars.

Please watch the video posted at the top of the blog. The ingenuity and raw talent will blow your mind.
