Life-saving Beer

On November 28, 2011, Clifton Vial, a resident of Nome, Alaska found himself trapped inside the cab of his Toyota pickup when he accidentally crashed his truck into a snowbank about 40 miles north out of town. The man had no food, no water and was stuck in the middle of harsh winds and snow drifts with temperatures dipping well below 0 with only a light fleece sleeping bag liner and a few cans of beer. He was wearing tennis shoes, jeans and a $30 jacket from Sears of which would have left him frostbit if he would have tried to get his truck out of there. Usually, he comes prepared with emergency provisions when he drives out but not this time around.

Vial resorted to eating snow and the few Coors Light “beercicles” he found in the back of his truck. To survive he popped the can with his knife, drained out any remaining liquid as he knew the alcohol would lower his body temperature and ate the frozen beer.

Each Coors Light contains approximately 102 calories per can – perhaps next time he should opt for a non-light beer to keep him warmer on those cold Alaskan nights.
