Depending on if someone tried to revive him before he was handed over to his family, this could possibly be a case of The Lazarus Syndrome, when a dead body returns to life unexpectedly. If someone tried to administer CPR after he died, the chest compression could have temporarily restarted his heart before he died again. Either that or he was mistakenly declared dead and woke up hours later only to die again later.
