Hawaiian Donald “D.J.” Dettloff is a surfer with a big imagination. Almost 20 years ago, with a storm threatening Maui, he tied his surfboards up with wire to prevent them from being blown away, giving him the inspiration for what has become a local landmark—a fence made entirely of surfboards. Over the years it has grown to include 700 boards, with many donated by friends and strangers, who all wanted to contribute their own surfboards, body boards and kite boards to the fence.

In Hawaii, surfing is serious business. They’ve been doing it for hundreds of years and it has even become a high school sport. Worldwide, surfing is worth billions and people catch waves in dozens of different countries.
