At the Phuket Vegetarian Festival in Thailand, devotees self-mutilate by piercing their faces and bodies with dozens of needles. Ritual vegetarianism in Phuket dates back to the early 19th century and participants at the nine-day festival perform acts of body piercing to purge others of evil spirits and bring good luck to the community.
