The latest book in our Curioddities series is out this week. Here’s a preview of the book, Simply Shocking.

The Lizardman, also known as Erik Sprague from Austin, Texas, is one of the most iconic individuals featured in Ripley’s Believe it or Not! A performance artist who has spent years transforming himself into a reptile-man hybrid. Erik’s entire body is covered in scaly tattoos, his teeth are filed to a point, he has implants in his forehead and a forked tongue.

And there he is admiring the detail of the wax replica our art department made of him. It took two days of continuous work just to complete the initial mold, not to mention all the time that came afterwards with the casting, tattooing and additional details. For the mold, he had to be covered head to toe, a chunk at a time, in latex.
