Prologue

It was almost 9:30 and Abby was going to be late for work—again! She rushed out of the subway station, taking the steps up to street level two at a time. Abby had tried so hard to be on time, but last night she had had dinner with her best friend Clare, who she hadn’t seen for ages, and they had talked for hours. Then, when her alarm went off this morning, she had just been so tired!

As she rushed along the sidewalk, Abby tried to work out how she was going to get everything done before the Ripley’s museum—where she worked—opened in half an hour.

Suddenly, Abby heard a strange noise. She pulled her cell phone from her pocket to see if someone was calling. It wasn’t the noise her phone normally made, but it would be just like Clare to have changed the ringtone while she wasn’t looking. But the noise wasn’t her phone. It grew louder and louder—a high-pitched whine, like an airplane makes just before its engines kick in. Abby looked up to see if there was a plane in trouble, shielding her eyes from the morning sun. As she did so, a large shadow appeared. Huge wings blocked out the sun, and warmth like a fire swallowed up the cool morning breeze. Bright flames lit up the sky as a large flying creature shot past above Abby’s head.

Thinking quickly, she switched her phone to camera mode and tried to get some film of the strange thing. Nobody would believe her about this unless they saw it! Running down the street she filmed until the thing, whatever it was, disappeared from view.

Replaying the video Abby looked closely at the screen. It almost seemed as if the creature was surrounded by fire. Abby felt herself go cold with fear. What could it possibly have been? Closing her phone, Abby ran the rest of the way to work—terrified that the creature might return.
