Believe It or Not!
At 75, grandmother Ernestine Shepherd of Baltimore, Maryland, is the world’s oldest competitive female bodybuilder. She wakes up at 3 a.m. every day to meditate, and then clocks up runs totaling 10 mi (16 km) before lunch. She started working out when she reached the age of 56, but has since won two bodybuilding contests and run nine marathons.
Have you always been into fitness and health?
I didn’t get into the fitness and health industry until I was 56, when my sister and I were invited to a church picnic, and they told us we could wear bathing suits. We put our bathing suits on and she said
“Wow, we don’t look good, we need to do something.” She was
57 and I was 56—we started exercising and noticed the change
in our bodies, and we loved it!
You started an online fitness program in 2006 at the age of 71—tell us how
things developed from there.
I had always wanted to become a bodybuilder, but I didn’t know how to go about it. I was introduced to trainer and former Mr. Universe, Yohnnie Shambourger and he developed a special training program for me. Over the next seven months my body made an incredible transformation and I was ready to compete against women half my age.
