Believe It or Not!
Selling Ice to an Eskimo
Kirill Rudenko has taken a cue from the bottled water industry. Why breathe air for free when you can pay $10 bucks for a 12oz can of not-so-fresh city air? Rudenko is a Prague-based photographer who is trying to sell proverbial Ice to an Eskimo–he is selling canned air.
With flavors like Paris, Prague, Berlin, New York, Singapore, and Riga (yea, I had to look that one up too. Riga is the capital of Latvia), you can get a blast of the city that, according to Rudenko’s Etsy shop where you can purchases the stuff, “relieves stress, cures homesickness and helps fighting nostalgia. It is made by careful hands in the heart of the city.”
It must be in the air
So, what do you get? Well, if you buy NYC Air, you can get a little taste of New York’s best sites:
20% Empire State Building
10% Grand Central Terminal
10% Chrysler Building
20% Statue of Liberty
10% Little Italy, Chinatown*
10% Brooklyn Bridge
10% Times Square
10% Central Park
Careful though, it “May contain traces of Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island.“ Not the Bronx! Oh, the horror!
Besides the following lovely sites for your sniffer, Singapore comes with a stern warning::
25% Botanic Gardens
10% Little India
20% Central Business District
15% The Singapore Flyer
10% Marina Bay Sands SkyPark
ATTENTION! Do not open in public places! The offense carries a punishment of imprisonment
for a term which may extend to 6 months, or with a fine extend to $25,500, or with both.
I hope this is just a novelty item, something you buy your friends for a laugh. I mean, how authentic could it be? Are there regulators for this kind of thing? He does claim that “Each week we receive a few hundreds of gallons of fresh air“. Guess that’s good enough for me!
