BIONEERS, our Team Amsterdam
In 2016 a new BION experience opened its doors at the heart of the city of Amsterdam. The BION creations of Mr. Robert Ripley started almost 100 years ago and up to this day they keep surprising the world with astonishing and unbelievable facts, all completely true. Here in Amsterdam the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Is the home of the Bioneers. The Bioneer Acronym is made of the first letters of words – Believe It Or Not (BION) and the word Pioneer. Robert Ripley was a pioneer and we, Bioneers, here in Amsterdam represent the following values:
INNOVATIVE: CREATIVE IN THINKING
Robert Ripley’s cartoons were distributed in newspapers worldwide, he was the first to broadcast nationwide on a radio network from mid-ocean, and he also was he first to broadcast to every nation in the world simultaneously.
ENTHUSIASTIC: BUILD WITH JOY YOUR TASKS
Despite Ripley’s avowal that everything in his cartoon was absolutely true, many readers simply refused to believe him, and they wrote letters, sometimes thousands each day. But that never stopped him, but encouraged him.
DETERMINATED: EXECUTE YOUR DREAMS NOW
During the Depression, as Americans sought affordable means of escape and entertainment, Ripley provided both. His cartoons appeared in more than 300 newspapers around the world, in dozens of languages, and were read by many millions.
FEARLESS: NEVER BE AFRAID TO ASK
His mission was to prove to readers that veracity and reality were elusive—Buffalo Bill never shot a buffalo, for example; he shot bison; Ireland’s St. Patrick wasn’t Irish or Catholic, and his name wasn’t Patrick. With our Bioneers Team Amsterdam, we share thousands of Believe It or Not’s that will amaze you every day.
REINVENTING: REINVENT YOURSELF CONSTANTLY, BE POLITE, RESPECTFUL AND FAIR
By glorifying freakish accomplishments, Ripley stoked a culture. Ripley never mocked the efforts of men such as E. L. Blystone, who wrote 1,615 letters of the alphabet on a grain of rice, or the two German railroad workers who drank 372 glasses of beer in 17 hours, or Jim White, who towed cars with his teeth. Ripley celebrated and defended the achievements of the masses. “Don’t insult Mr. Blystone’s ego,” he’d say. “Could you do that? . . . Could you?”
Amsterdam is the new Frontier of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! And the new dream has just started. In a city with inhabitants from over 180 different nationalities living together, Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Is here to stay. Could you be a Bioneer and part of our team Amsterdam and represent these values?
