Ingenuity + Love = Something Epic

There is a town in Paraguay that is built on top of a landfill. The residents of Cateura not only live atop the garbage, it is their very livelihood.

Many who live in the town work as garbage collectors. They survive on recycling discarded items. Some items they sell, other items they use in their daily lives.

Life in Cateura is not easy. The families that live there are among the poorest in Paraguay. How is it then possible that they have a world-renowned philharmonic orchestra?

Read on.

One Man’s Garbage is Another Man’s Treasure

Nicolás Gómez, a garbage collector, and Favio Chávez, a music instructor, wanted to make a difference in the lives of some of these children. They decided to start a music program.

Musical instruments can be very expensive. Since Gómez and Chávez did not have money to purchase instruments, they did the next best thing … they crafted instruments from items found in the trash!

YOU HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT!

Recycling Trash Into Hope

TheLandfillharmonic” was born! These extraordinary young people, with the help of Gómez and Chávez, have managed to create an entire orchestra out of garbage and pure passion.

The world sends us garbage. We send back music.

The young musicians have overcome almost insurmountable poverty and impossible circumstances. They have re-defined their lives and restored hope one beautiful musical note after another. They literally make trash sound like a million bucks.

If this is not the very definition of UNBELIEVABLE, then we don’t know what is … and we are the experts at unbelievable. Check out the pics below.

It really makes our  “first world problems” seem quite underwhelming. Maybe that’s what President Kennedy meant when he said “We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard” NOW GO & DO SOMETHING UNBELIEVABLE!
