Her “Ten Jewels”
The 56-year-old grandmother from Houston, Texas, devotes several hours a day tending to her nails, and admits she is a perfectionist when it comes to her “ten jewels.”
The nails are capped (painted on the top and around the edges) to help prevent them from breaking, and Ayanna is a regular at Spathena in Houston, where manicurist Athena Elliot works hard to keep the nails healthy.
When cooking in the kitchen Ayanna needs plenty of room because her fingernails get in the way, and she does not wash dishes by hand because her nails don’t fit in the sink.
Day to day task are a little harder with giant nails.
Life can be difficult, but she just takes things at her own pace and eventually gets the job done—and she has plenty of family to help out.
Every morning when she wakes up she asks herself if she should cut them—but it is easier said than done.
“I love them. They are 50 percent of who I am. To cut them would be like losing a limb.”
