These Glowing Instruments Are Made of ICE!
The instruments are constructed almost completely by ice ranging from thick blocks on the xylophone to pieces that are just 3 millimeters thick!
In the case of the violin the musician’s breath can be enough to melt a hole in the instrument.
But how do you keep them from melting?
To keep the instruments from melting the musicians perform on a specially constructed stage, which they call a “giant cosmic igloo” for a reason: It’s -5 Celsius or just 23 degrees Fahrenheit!
Make sure to bring a jacket!
But it’s not only the temperature in the room: They have to protect the instruments from melting by the performers themselves! Some instruments have guards to protect them from the player’s breath! In the case of the violin the musician’s breath can be enough to melt a hole in the instrument.
It can take a week to freeze and build each instrument out of ice! These instruments are so heavy that some need to be attached to the roof for support and safety!
ICE Music has a whole list of instruments that they make and play!
