Sea Organ

The Zadar Sea Organ sits on the Adriatic Sea in the city of Zadar, Croatia. As waves push into the tonal holes carved in the steps, a beautiful melody plays.

Making the Organ

After suffering heavy damage in the wake of World War II, reconstruction was rushed in an effort to revitalize the city.

Architect Nikola Bašić noticed that the new concrete structures seemed sterile, and took away from the playfulness that had once dotted the coast.

How Does It Work?

Completed in 2005, the musical jetty stretches 230 feet and consists of a system of strategically tuned tubes and a large resonant chamber.

As wind and waves enter from underneath, air is pushed through the tubes to play seven chords of five different tones.
